A study of 2,315 Finnish men aged 42-60 found that regular sauna use resulted in a 40% reduction in all cause mortality and a nearly 50% decreased risk of fatal heart disease.  Heat shock proteins produced during heat stress are important for basic cellular maintenance e.g. preventing harmful accumulations of unhealthy proteins and have been linked in many studies to significant increases in lifespan.  Regular use of infrared saunas has been shown to improve heart health, reduce blood pressure, regulate blood sugar, and lower cholesterol.  A review of clinical trials suggested that sauna can benefit heart health by improving heart muscle contractions, reducing arterial stiffness and blood lipids, and can be of therapeutic value to patients with chronic congestive heart disease (CHD).
